Bias-Variance Tradeoffs Analysis using Uniform CR Bound for Images

چکیده
We apply a uniform Cramer-Rao (CR) bound [l] to study the bias-variance trade-offs in parameter estimation. The uniform CR bound is used to specify achievable and unachievable regions in the bias-variance trade-off plane. The applications considered in this paper are: 1) twodimensional single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) system, and 2) one dimensional edge localization.

Bias-Variance Tradeoffs Analysis Using Uniform CR Bound For a SPECT System
We quantify fundamental bias-variance tradeoffs for the image reconstruction problem in radio-pharmaceutical tomography using Cramer-Rao (CR) bound analysis. The image reconstruction problem is very often biased and the classical or the unbiased CR bound on the mean square error performance of the estimator can not be used. We use a recently developed ‘uniform’ CR bound which a p plies to biase...
متن کاملImage resolution-variance tradeoffs using the uniform Cramèr-Rao bound
In image reconstruction and restoration, there exists an inherent tradeoff between the recovered spatial resolution and statistical variance: lower variance can be bought at the price of decreased spatial resolution. This tradeoff can be captured for a particular regularized estimator by tracing out the resolution and variance as a curve indexed by the estimator’s smoothing parameter. When the ...

Previously we introduced the Uniform Cram&-Rao (CR) Bound as a lower bound on the variance of biased estimators, along with the concept of the delta-sigma tradeoff curve. For an estimator whose variance lies on this curve, lower variance can only be achieved at the price of increased estimator bias gradient norm, and vice versa. However, for single pixel estimation, one can specify a variety of...

We introduce a plane, which we call the delta-sigma plane, that is indexed by the norm of the estimator bias gradient and the variance of the estimator. The norm of the bias gradient is related to the maximum variation in the estimator bias function over a neighborhood of parameter space. Using a uniform Cramer-Rao (CR) bound on estimator variance a delta-sigma tradeo curve is speci ed which de...
